STATUS: CURRENT

The Ulopolis project is a continuation of the study of honey bee populations started under the Beesensor project. Ulopolis is a polytechnic apiary that will facilitate the analysis of bee behavior and allow researchers to develop measuring instruments and devices to help care for bee colonies.
Ulopolis is not intended for honey production, nor is it intended to study the biology of the honeybee. The apiary is a research station for the field testing of various kinds of technical solutions that can be applied to beekeeping. Nowadays, beekeepers are in great need of modern technical equipment that would improve apiary management and allow them to easily and inexpensively obtain information on the condition of bee colonies, as well as on the conditions inside the hives.

The apiary constructed as part of the project was set up on the roof of the C-6 building. The temperature, humidity and gas sensors installed in the apiary allow the monitoring of the conditions inside the hives. A meteorological station in the vicinity provides data on the current weather situation. The seating of the hives on specially constructed scales allows their weight to be measured continuously. Meanwhile, a camera system allows observation of the area in front of the hive, as well as its interior.

The project is being carried out by the Faculty of Environmental Engineering at Wrocław University of Science and Technology. WCSS is cooperating with researchers from the department in securing and archiving the data from the apiary monitoring. It is also responsible for technical aspects related to the preparation and maintenance of the apiary's website. The website enables, among other things, streaming video from all cameras in the apiary.

Funds for the development and purchase of the equipment come entirely from the budget of the Department of Environmental Engineering.
