PLATON Science Services Platform – Stage I: Shared services container

PLATON Science Services Platform is a hardware and software infrastructure of national range, built within the PLATON project. The project was carried out by 22 units that are also members of the PIONIER Consortium, including WCSS.
As a result of the PLATON project, the national ICT infrastructure for science (PIONIER network) has been expanded with applications and services supporting scientific research and development of Polish research teams for the innovative economy. The direct goal of the project, i.e. implementation of modern ICT services: videoconferencing, eduroam, campus services, universal archiving, scientific interactive television, has been realised, and made available to the scientific community in Poland.
I. Video conferencing services implemented by constructing a high-quality, secure videoconferencing system in the PIONIER network, which enables both point-to-point connections and connections between multiple locations at the same time, as well as the option to record individual videoconferences and replay them.
II. Eduroam services is simple and secure roaming of people from the environment of science and higher education in Poland thanks to launching model secure wireless access systems in all MAN networks and HPCs.
III. Campus services are constructed on the basis of an innovative computing and service structure with nationwide coverage, delivering on-demand applications capable of providing a wide range of users from the academic and research communities with flexible, scalable access to specific applications, both on MS Windows and Linux, taking into account the needs of specific professional groups in these environments.
IV. Universal archiving services provide nationwide remote archiving and data backup functionality based on the nationwide academic research network PIONIER. The service, which increases data protection in real time, is one of the elements necessary to increase the reliability of each unit, and was addressed to the academic environment, including universities, research and development units and hospitals dependent on universities and medical academies.
V. Scientific interactive HD television services is to provide the scientific community with a national distribution platform for scientific interactive HD television, and additional services based on high-definition digital content for education, popularisation of science and telemedicine.
