The WASK consortium is an agreement between Wrocław universities and scientific and research institutions, concluded on May 4, 1994 in Wrocław. It connects scientific, research and academic communities, ensuring access to the Wrocław Academic Computer Network (WASK).
It is a wide-area backbone network allowing the connection of one or more local networks of a subscriber in order to provide access to national and global Internet service servers and high-performance computers (the PIONIER network and the European GÉANT2 network).

The WASK network is operated by Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (WCSS), operating on the basis of an entry in the register of telecommunications entrepreneurs (No. 756). WCSS provides telecommunications services to WASK subscribers. Any institution that has signed a subscriber agreement with Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (WCSS) can become a subscriber. The body supervising the operation of the WASK consortium is the User Council of the Wrocław Academic Computer Network.

WCSS activities as part of the WASK consortium:
  • supervising the operation of the fiber optic network and active devices
  • connecting new subscribers to WASK and configuring active devices
  • monitoring the operation of the network at set times on both working days and holidays
  • assigning addresses; registering domains of WASK subscribers and running domain name servers
  • managing Internet service servers, such as mail servers, ftp servers, WWW, Netnews, LDAP, IRC
  • controlling network security and protecting it against unauthorized access to active devices, servers, resources and high-performance computers.
