The purpose of the KMD2 project was to develop a functional model and a prototype of a new, advanced system for secure data storage and sharing as well as for storing backup and archival data. This system is based on solutions developed in the
National Data Warehouse (KMD) project and has been provided with further reliability, security and scalability functions. The new functionalities of the system allow it to be used by both large corporate units and individual users of Internet service providers (scale effect, mass service). The main tasks of KMD2 include:
- Enabling the storage of backups and long-term storage of archival data
- Safe sharing and exchanging large files
- Storing and securely sharing large digital collections online.
The project was focused on:
- Scalability
- Reliability
- Safety.
The functionalities added to KMD2 with respect to KMD include:
- Data sharing within the KMD2 system by users
- Safe data sharing for external users and safe data publication in the so-called limited file sharing and exchanging environment (sandbox)
- Data versioning, version management and file version presentation
- Secure copier and encryption device – the so-called appliance, implementing efficient cryptography (hardware-assisted), as well as the function of sharing data within an organization.
Except additional functions (from the point of view of the system user), KMD2 has developed, inter alia, the following system mechanisms and functions:
- Automatic encryption and control of the integrity of data stored in the KMD2 system on the user's side, implemented via the appropriate KMD2 system interface or a copy-encryption device
- Elements of SLA, i.e. defining and controlling as well as enforcing the quality of services.
